There's another story about 42nd
Street
I want to tell you before we continue.
The company played Washington
for about four or five weeks on
their way into New York
for their previews in the opening.
and they got absolutely wonderful
reviews in Washington.
The company was so excited,
the audiences had been more
than responsive.
They were just screaming and
carrying on.
It was a great time. thought,
well, we're really on this roll here.
It's just great.
We can't wait to get into New York.
However, they came into New York
to begin their previews
and Merrick suddenly got cold
feet.
And he thought,
I just don't want the New York Times
and all the other papers coming in here
before I think we're ready.
So, he hired armed guards
to stand guard
at every entrance of the theater
to keep the New York Times out.
And then he thought, wait a minute,
now if I really want to keep the papers out,
the thing to do is to just keep
everybody out.
So 42nd Street did two weeks
of previews,
eight shows a week,
full costume, hair, makeup,
lights, the whole thing.
Eight performances for two weeks
to a completely empty theater.
I know this is hard to believe,
but this happened.
Well, the company was
going crazy.
They were just going nuts.
Carol Cook, who was in 42nd Street,
suggested to everybody that they bring
in their stuffed animals.
So they put all their
stuffed animals
in the front row,
and they played the show
for their chicks and ducks
and bunnies and bears.
Obviously he relented at some point,
because 42nd Street ran for eight long,
Ab
wonderful years.

Sometimes songs like that
come out of shows
and become so popular, so well -loved,
Ab
our musical memory.
absolutely gorgeous songs
that somehow seem to get left behind
It's one of those
Eb
that I'd like to do for you next.
Both of these songs are from
Carnival by Bob Merrill.
The melody of this next song
is one that I think Puccini would
have been proud of.

Love makes the world go round.
