Verse 1
G
This is a- a Mountain Dulcimer from
E
B
the Appalachian Mountains in America
F#m
It's a truly American folk instrument,
B
right?
And, uh- this was made for me by a girl
named Joellen who's from California
A
She does beautiful work, just-
Verse 2
D
She's used all kinds of
beautiful woods
A
B
Purple heart for the sides and coco burro
Which is kind of a- uhm, ripply
A
D
orange wood for the back
And for the sound hole,
A
she's carved little stylized swallows and
B
And, and on the tuning head,
there's a hawk, and a
This is the 12th one that she's built
F#m
And everybody's always waiting for the next
one that she does, you know?
Verse 3
A
As far as the origin of it goes, there's
E
F#m
some confusion
Some people say that the Scots,
A
when they came to the Appalachians
E
Were, were longing for their bagpipes,
you know?
A
So they built this thing because it
E
A
had lots of drones to it and a
F#m
Some people say that, indeed,
it was the Swedes
A
Who, longing for their Zither,
Other people say that one day they
F#m
just took a Fiddle
B
And stretched it out and put it on their lap
Verse 4
A
E
anyway, here it is,
A
F#m
the Appalachian dulcimer
B
A
And you can tune it any way you want to
B
E
A
F#m
Just like any instrument,
B
like the Guitar or the Piano
A
E
A
E
I'm going into a tuning now that
F#m
I call matelotuning
A
Because I found it, as well as the song
E
F#m
I'm going to play In Matlocrete
Verse 5
B
That was this place in- in Crete where a lot of people
E
came to live in the caves
B
You know? And there were two big walls
C#m
of caves on each side of a- a flat plain
And they looked like, uh- Halava cliffs,
B
they were about that color
You know, Halava is?
A
Well, that's what they looked like
G#m
And at night, they looked like
C#m
big tenement buildings
Because people would have little
B
fires going in their caves
A
G#m
And all of the different levels
C#m
would be lit up
B
And kind of spots of light all over them
Verse 6
G#m
this is last spring I'm talking about
A
G#m
There were a whole lot of people living there
F#m
B
F#m
I don't know, how many people do you
Bsus4
A
E
think there were there- but about 150freaks?
From all over the place,
A
E
A
F#m
B
A
from France and Canada and the United States of America
B
E
A
F#m
And, uh, England,
everywhere
A
B
E
And, uh, they used to eat at
the Mermaid Cafe
F#m
Most people who didn't cook in their caves
A
E
B
ate down at the Mermaid Cafe
C#m
They also did most of their
Verse 7
A
Because the guy who ran the place,
Stelios
G#m
Really liked all of the freaks, you know?
C#m
B
He like the encouraged their business
A
G#m
Not like other people in the town
C#m
Who sort of smiled and took your
dracks from you
B
Well, that's neither here nor there
Verse 8
A
On Easter, there was a family that came
G#m
down the beach and
A
G#m
Who decided that they were going to
F#m
A
blend in with the freaks, you know?
B
F#m
And they came wearing headbands that
A
Bsus4
B
they'd made out of cloth, you know?
E
F#m
That they'd ripped off of their
A
pillowcases or something
E
And around their neck,
A
E
A
F#m
one man had a string with old curlers on it for his beads
A
And another guy had a- a zucchini squash
Verse 9
threaded onto a string painted bright red
E
And they gave us red Easter eggs
F#m
And little breads with kind of
an egg paste in the middle
A
An d they were very nice and
the girl played the guitar
E
And we all sat around and
A
had a really lovely Easter
F#m
But this is a song about a
friend of mine from Matala
A
A friend of mine from London and Los Angeles
